7 Reasons To Not To Miss This Year's MTV VMAs - MTV News Posted: 23 Aug 2019 01:20 PM PDT The MTV Video Music Awards are hitting the screens this Monday, August 26 on MTV. This iconic awards show always brings on killer performances and (occasionally unscripted) memorable on-screen moments, but this year we feel there is a lot more in store to be stoked for. In order to get you fully prepared and excited for this year's awards, we've rallied up a few things that we cannot wait to watch. Tune into the MTV Video Music Awards, airing LIVE on Monday, August 26 at 8e/7p on MTV Canada, and streaming live right here on MTV.ca/VMA. Catch the Red Carpet Pre-Show too, starting at 7e/4p.   Host With The Most Last year the MTV VMAs were hostless (which, surprisingly, isn't the first time that this has happened.) This year they're packing in the jokes with the hilarious short king, Sebastian Maniscalco. Who Will Wear It Best On The Carpet? What's an awards show without the glitzy clothes? Whether you like to admit to it or not, awards show fashion is what we all live for because everyone pulls out all the stops to look their Sunday best (or at least they try.) We'll never forget Lady Gaga's environmentally conscious, 100 per cent vegan dress, or Lil Kim's daring one-shouldered jumpsuit. Who do you think will don the most fashion forward look (and who will sport the worst?) All The Pre-Performances… We're still not done living our hot girl summers, and neither is Megan Thee Stallion, who is part of the amp up squad before the awards show. Thee Stallion will be joined by "Sweet by Psycho" songstress, Ava Max, and popular Latin band, CNCO. … And All The Main Show Events Though we're already in for a flirty performance between "Señorita" sweethearts, Shawn Mendes, and Camilla Cabello, we're sure in for a treat this year with who's taking on the main stage. There are a lot of fresh new faces performing at this year's VMAs, with Bad Bunny, H.E.R.., J. Balvin, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, and Rosalía being a few of them. We're also seeing the return of some major celebrities too. Hot off the latest release of her seventh studio album, Lover, Taylor Swift will take the stage and likely stunt us with her signature dance moves. We're burnin' up at the thought that The Jonas Brothers, will also take the VMAs stage, after an 11-year hiatus. And of course, last but certainly not least, get ready to put your thing down, flip it and reverse it with this year's Video Vanguard Award recipient, Missy Elliott. Elliott's last VMAs performance was back in 2006, so we're 100 per cent certain she'll get her freak on for this. Meme-worthy Moments Something always happens at the VMAs. Whether it's Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech, or Miley Cyrus' infamous performance with Robin Thicke, a meme-able moment always transpires. So be sure to keep your eye out on what's #trending on Twitter on Monday night. Three New Fan-Voted Categories This year the VMAs are introducing not one, not two, but three new fan-voted categories: Best Group, Best Power Anthem, and Song of the Summer. Fans can vote in via Instagram via MTV's IG story — so get at it if you haven't cast your vote yet. The voting for Song of the Summer ends the day before the awards show at 12 p.m. ET. Missy Elliott (Finally) Receiving The Video Vanguard Award Rap legend and hip hop icon, Missy Elliott, is receiving this year's MTV's Video Vanguard Award, joining the elite club of musical geniuses that include Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. For VMAs alone, Elliott has been nominated a total of 41 times, and has taken home seven of those for hits like "Work It", "Get Ur Freak On" and "WTF". Elliott is also a five-time Grammy Award winner and is the only female rapper with six platinum studio albums. To kick off the weekend and celebrate her iconic legacy, Elliott released an EP titled Iconology, and dropped a music video for one of her new songs, "Throw It Back". So in light of the fact that it's been 14 years since The Cookbook dropped, it's time to lose control and celebrate this queen.
