I've heard about this cult favorite and seen it on some other people, and I felt that it looked flattering on all skin tones so I decided to order it. This was what I originally wanted until I found out that the Sephora Cream Lip Stain (Marvelous Mauve) and the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick (Lolita) were sold out. I actually would've liked Marvelous Mauve because I heard that it is slightly darker and creamier. Unfortunately, that is the most popular shade of all the Sephora's Cream Lip Stains. Patina is currently sold out on the Sephora website, but I was able to order it on the Ulta along with the Too Faced Semi Sweet Chocolate Bar (I know...I am really trying not to buy a lot of makeup this month because of my NYC trip in 3 weeks...and I also just bought 2 MAC lipsticks. Oops.)
I was worried that it wouldn't show up on my lips and it would be too light. This is more of a baby pinkish brown on medium–dark skin tones and medium mauve on light skin tones. I'm not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed when I first tried it on. It was too light. But once it dries, it gets darker. I just have dark pink lips so anything too light (like a baby pink...think UD's Revolution lipstick in Lovelight) would hardly show up. This one does show up on me and I ended up growing to like it a lot!
I snapped this picture above using natural light from my window. I guess my disappointment trying it on last night came from the fact that the lighting in my house is really warm and dim, so my swatches or makeup colors don't look the most accurate. I actually really like it! It's another MLBB shade (my lips but better) for us NC 40 gals.
It glides on smoothly but dries fast. You can expect it to last throughout the day without any problem. I know this because I have a really hard time taking this off. I also have 2 of the Stila's Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Glosses (Terracotta and Scarlet) but those fade fast.
You can press your lips together with the Stila Liquid Lipsticks and it doesn't feel very smooth. It's very matte. It's quite drying and emphasizes the lines in your lips, unlike the more satin and creamy finish lipsticks. This is even more matte than my MAC Matte lipsticks (Russian Red and Candy Yum Yum. I'm sure the formula of Patina is probably on the same level as the MAC Retro Matte lipsticks) So be careful and remember to exfoliate and moisturize before applying this.
The price is steep at $22 but that is to be expected with higher end brands. It is a gorgeous color that suites all skin tones and a "Kylie Jenner" type of shade. I like the shades of lipsticks she uses, but I don't care about plumping mine like hers. This is great for everyday wear and is a good shade for the spring (because of the feminine pink) and fall (because it's also brownish). Now I am looking into getting the shade Aria! Someday though.
